ENNA


Enna (in the past Castrogiovanni, Castrugiuvanni in Sicilian language) is a municipality of 29.072 people, homonymous provincial capital famous as the highest provincial capital of Italy, for the altitude of the built-up area that reaches 970 mt above sea level. The town is also famous for the saying Urbs Inexpugnabilis, as the Romans called it for its impregnability, umbilicus of Sicily, thanks to its verified geographical centrality relative to the island, and also Viewpoint of Sicily, for its magnificent panoramic view on most of the region. After a glory past that, for more than three millenniums, saw the town a favored stronghold for Sicani (old Sicilians), Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabians, Normans, Swabians, Aragoneses, Enna still lives a period of great development and prestige on the International and National field, especially for its modern university, for its racetrack where they some had several races of Formula 1 and Formula 3000, for its industrial zone, leader in all central south Italy for the production of electric energy through the exploitation of the biomasses, but also for the traces left by a blooming civilization, represented by the castles, towers, old quarters, churches in the historical center, wonderful palaces and excellent viewpoints.

 

PIAZZA ARMERINA


The story of Piazza (the name Armerina was added in 1862) started in the Norman period, but its territory was populated since the prehistory, as it is showed in the archeological remains of Monte Navone and Montagna di Marzo. The town was very blooming in Roman time, as it is testified by the wonderful Roman villa of Casale of the fourth century A.C., with its mosaic floors famous in all the world. During the centuries it has been subjected to several events, but it often has had prestigious political roles and its cultural and economic life has always been active, as to be called the affluent town by the emperor Charles V. Piazza Armerina (721 m asl ctz 22.000 about) is the ideal town for who want to spend a nice relaxing and cultural vacation. It is, sure enough, a union between the nature and the man. About 20.000 hectares of green blooming woods milden the weather during the hot summer days that makes it the ideal place for vacation. It is also a town of artistic interest and its numerous monuments, that represent an invaluable cultural heritage , deserve to be discovered again.

 

ENNA PROVINCE AND ITS LAKES PERGUSA, THE LAKE AND ITS PATH


The province of Enna is very rich of beautiful landscapes still unpolluted, it is the ideal place to spend some relaxing day, by the lakeside to fish or just to sunbathe. The area hosts about five of the 37 Sicilian lake, precisely Pergusa lake, Pozzillo lake in Regalbuto, the Ancipa barrage in Troina, Ogliastro lake in Aidone territory and Nicoletti lake in Leonforte. The most famous is Pergusa lake, the unique natural lake in Enna province. Another reason that made the lake famous is the presence of rare microorganisms able to create a unique phenomenon in the world, that is to color its water red, giving the landscape a great suggestiveness. Around the basin there is a racetrack that hosts numerous races even international ones, that put it at the interest of sporting people from all over the world. Pergusa lake from 1991 became Special Natural Reserve and it has been left in Regional Province of Ennas care.
