Locale description

Santo Stefano di Camastra (Santu Stèfanu di Camastra in Sicilian) is an Italian town of 4,648 inhabitants of the metropolitan city of Messina in Sicily. It is a municipality in the Nebrodi Park, 99 km from Palermo and 133 km from Messina, almost on the border with the metropolitan city of Palermo. S. Stefano takes its name from the church of the Benedictine monastery of S. Croce di Santo Stefano in Val Demone (sanctuary built in the Norman period, a place of pilgrimage). Until 1682, the date of a disastrous landslide, the name "di Mistretta" was added to the name of Santo Stefano. The appellative "di Camastra" was taken to honor the memory of Giuseppe Lanza, Duke of Camastra, advocate of the reconstruction of the new center The first nucleus of the farmhouse is formed as an aggregation of a group of vassals and peasants who depend on the Monastery of S. Stefano. For the entire period in which it continues in its legal status of a farmhouse, it is an ecclesiastical fiefdom employed by the Abbey of the SS. Trinità di Mileto until 1454 and in the employ of the Abbey of S. Anastasia of Castelbuono from 1454 to 1683. In 1639 the title of prince of S. Stefano di Mistretta was granted to Antonio Napoli, thus affecting the right of lordship of the abbey of S. Anastasia. The title is added in particular to the administration of the assets of the priory of St. Anastasia, which provides for the possibility of collecting the gabelles and the acquisition of the rights to baulia, catapania and customs. From the XI century, date of its alleged construction, to the XVIIth the hamlet keeps the denomination of Santo Stefano di Mistretta, to indicate a close bond to the most important center of Mistretta. The denomination lasts until the landslide of 1682, due to the large landslides caused by torrential rains. Ruined the old town, the new inhabited center rises in 1683 by the will of the Duke of Camastra, under whose rule it is found to be. Prince Giuseppe Lanza, duke of Camastra, and the woman princess Maria Gomez de Silvera ask the king for licentia aedificandi, which is granted on March 30, 1683, creating a new town with a characteristic geometric urban layout. The urban design was given by the military engineer Carlos de Grunenbergh, collaborator of the Duke of Camastra and designer of numerous fortifications in Sicily. De Grunenbergh used a scheme that looks like a circumscribed rhombus in a square. Don Giuseppe Lanza from this moment can also boast the title of Prince of the Earth and State of S. Stefano di Mistretta. The Center officially assumed the name of S. Stefano di Camastra starting from 1812, the year in which the Constitution was promulgated in Sicily and which marked the beginning of the history of the current municipality. Source Wikipedia
